Epididymovasostomy Pictorial

This photograph demonstrates an obstructed epididymis with very dilated tubules throughout its length. The testis and epididymis have been delivered from the testis.

The end-to-side epididymovasostomy results in an anastomosis between the abdominal end of the vas deferens and the side of an epididymal tubule. In general, the anastomosis is performed to an epididymal tubule which contains sperm.

After placing several 9-0 nylon sutures from the muscularis layer of the vas deferens to the epididymal tunic, approximately 6 to 8 inner layer sutures of 10-0 nylon are placed. The vas deferens (left) has been highlighted in blue.

After placement of the inner layer sutures, the anastomosis is tied down.

A supporting outer layer of interrupted 9-0 nylon sutures is placed.
